Financial Officers Receive Training

More than 100 local union financial officers attended Ohio Council 8's annual treasurers training held in Columbus on April 26th.

“Any union officer who is responsible for union money - presidents, vice presidents, treasurers, board members and trustees - are financial officers of the union and they need this training,” said Ohio Council 8 Controller Louisa Arce, a presenter at the seminar.

Arce was joined by AFSCME International Auditor Cathy German who gave a detailed explanation of each article of AFSCME’s financial standards code. In addition, attendees were instructed on what documents the local union must maintain, the various reports which must be filed with the Department of Labor and the IRS, the local union audit process, and best practices for union financial activities.

“We’re a new local and this is great information,” said Kim Smith, the secretary treasurer for the union representing the Clark County Department of Job and Family Services. “It’s good to know AFSCME is serious about protecting our union dues.”

AFSCME International also provided an attractive and informative package of instructional materials to each participant.
