Former Ohio AFL-CIO President John Hodges, 83, who led the labor organization from 1987 to October of 1993, died Wednesday.

A long-time steelworker, Hodges began his labor career at the General Electric plant in Coshocton, which he helped organize.

He worked his way up the ranks of the union and was elected president of the Columbus-Franklin County AFL-CIO in 1973. He was selected as secretary-treasurer of the Ohio AFL-CIO in 1986, and a year later was named president.
