Why AFSCME Ohio Council 8?

Why Choose AFSCME Ohio Council 8?

AFSCME Ohio Council 8 is the union for Ohio’s municipal, county, regional authorities, schools, universities, hospitals, and non-profit workers. With 41,000 members covered by more than 400 negotiated contracts across the state, Council 8 is Ohio’s premier public employee union.

AFSCME Ohio Council 8 is respected around the state not only as a strong union, but as a champion for the strengthening of public services. We only have to look at the disaster that was Katrina, recent coal miners deaths, unsafe food and the I-35 bridge collapse to see what under-funded government gets us. Had our government been better funded, we would have repaired the levees in Katrina, upgraded America’s bridges and inspected food and coal mines for safety. AFSCME works in the legislature to help ensure that we get better funded public services so our communities will thrive and be safe.

By organizing an Ohio Council 8 union you will be a part of AFSCME’s 1.6 million members across the nation. AFSCME is:

  • Adequate funding for public services
The Members Run the Union
AFSCME is a truly democratic union run by its members. AFSCME members elect their own officers. Each local has its own constitution and its members vote to determine policy, activities and local dues structure.

Members also vote on contract approval or rejection. These rights are guaranteed by the International Union Constitution and the AFSCME Bill of Rights for Members.
